GRAVE MARKER FROM MONTANA CEMETERY
Graduate students at the University of Montana have used the CDEAL GIS to locate the home area of an early 20th century resident of a Western mining district in the USA. At present, this GIS tells us that Deng Wang was from HeShan county north of Macau. He spoke a form of Cantonese. His home county was off the beaten path as the post office only handled money orders because no trains or steamboats traveled through the area. In fact, the county seat had less than 4,000 people! This information is currently being used to fuel local interest in protecting these graves from looting.

LAWRENCE CHINESE CAMP, NEW ZEALAND
The two images above show emigrant areas for the Lawrence Chinese Camp (LCC). Unique historical documentation exists for this small Chinese settlement on the gold fields of New Zealand that allows researchers to locate home area information from the period 1896-1913. Using this information, we know where to target historical research within China to provide data used to interpret archaeological materials currently being interpreted at this site. You can access a more detailed discussion of the LCC here.
